Worker killed in accident at Casella landfill in Coventry

A subcontractor was killed Thursday morning after falling from an aerial lift at the Casella Waste Systems landfill in Coventry, according to Vermont State Police.Emergency crews were called to the landfill at about 9:40 a.m. for a report of an unconscious man. Newport EMS transported Thomas Feerick, 58, of Fairfax, to North Country Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.Police said Feerick had been hired as a subcontractor and was using an aerial lift to remove a section of fencing when the lift tipped over down a small embankment.Investigators said Feerick was not wearing a safety harness and was ejected from the platform when the lift struck the ground or just before impact. Nearby contractors rushed to help and called 911.Police said all evidence indicates the incident was accidental and is not considered suspicious.Feerick's body was taken to the Chief Medical Examiner's Office in Burlington, where an autopsy will determine the cause and manner of death.No additional information was immediately available.
