LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A grand jury indicted a man accused of stealing a car with a passenger inside and crashing into a pole, resulting in the passenger's death, the 8 News Now Investigators have learned. Harold Allen, 55, is charged with murder with use of a deadly weapon, grand larceny auto, and two counts each of reckless driving resulting in death or substantial bodily harm and battery with a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm. Allen remains in jail without bail. A Clark County prosecutor told District Judge Carli Kierny Friday that Allen was deemed competent to stand trial, after undergoing an evaluation. Allen is accused of stealing a vehicle from the parking lot of a Walmart near Charleston and Decatur boulevards on Saturday, April 11, while Benito Saragosa, 37, was sitting inside it. Saragosa's mother said she left the keys in the ignition so her son could stay in the car with the air conditioning running while she shopped at the store, according to police. Allen stole the car, drove off, and crashed into another vehicle before colliding with the pole, police said. Allen is seen on video approaching the vehicle and speeding away before crashing, according to police. A witness who called 911 told police Allen told him, "I was trying to beat the light," before falling unconscious, police said. Allen also crashed into a vehicle with a mother and child inside, according to the Clark County District Attorney's office. Allen previously served prison time on theft and drug charges, according to records. Allen is scheduled to appear in court on July 15.
