Murder or accident? Mackenzie Shirilla’s parents make their case | CUOMO Crime Time: Weekend Edition
Chris Cuomo sits down separately with Natalie and Steve Shirilla, the parents of Mackenzie Shirilla, to hear their side regarding their daughter's conviction. In 2023, a Cuyahoga County judge convicted their daughter of murder in a bench trial, finding she intentionally drove her car into a Strongsville, Ohio building at roughly 100 miles per hour in July 2022, killing her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and their friend, Davion Flanagan. She is serving 15 years to life. Her parents maintain it was a tragic accident, not an intentional act, and are still fighting the conviction after the state appeals court upheld it and the Ohio Supreme Court declined to intervene. Chris Cuomo gives each parent room to make their case on the disputed evidence, their daughter's conduct after the crash, and their belief that the trial was unfair, while pressing them on the facts, the legal standards, and the credibility questions the case has drawn.
