Winter conditions in fatal crash of Iowa teen

A teenager from Fairfield tragically lost her life in a crash that occurred late Saturday night in Jefferson County. Emmelia Miller, aged 17 and also from Fairfield, was driving a 2009 Lexus north on Hemlock Avenue around 10:15 p.m. when she lost control of the vehicle and was struck by a 2025 Dodge. Weather conditions played a role in the accident, according to authorities. Unfortunately, Miller was not wearing a seatbelt and was declared dead at the scene. A 25-year-old man from Fairfield sustained injuries but did not require hospital transportation, while a 24-year-old woman was injured and taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics by ambulance. It is unclear which vehicle the injured individuals were traveling in. The incident is currently being investigated. According to recent data from the Iowa Department of Transportation, 17 fatalities have occurred on Iowa roads this year, which is eight more than the same period in 2025. On average, 337 individuals have died in crashes across the state annually over the past five years.
