‘They live through us’: Willimantic community mourns 2 men who died in Chaplin crash
CHAPLIN, Conn. (WTNH) — A vigil was held on Monday night to remember two young men who lost their lives in a car crash on Friday in Chaplin. A large crowd gathered together to mourn the loss of Jaiden Pacheco, 20, and Geovani Jr. Aponte, 18, who died in the crash on Route 6 in Chaplin. "It's been hell, but with the graces of God I am staying together," Pacheco's father, Ramon Pacheco, said. "We don't really know what really happened, what caused it, how it happened," Aponte's sister, Danichalee Marcano, said. "I don't really even know what to think" Connecticut State Police are investigating the crash. Two other people suffered serious injuries from the incident, and they are still recovering in the hospital. State police said they will have no further information until the investigation is finalized. With questions still unanswered and emotions overflowing, the Willimantic community gathered with candles and pictures while a sermon was shared. "Right now, we are looking at two families that have lost someone, so that doubles the impact on the community," local pastor Carlos Correa said. Pacheco's father said he has received messages from people everywhere around the state in addition to the large gathering on Monday. "He took care of me and my sister, my kids loved him," Marcano said. "I have four kids and he was a great uncle." "We lost them, but they live through us no matter what, we all should know this," Pacheco said.
