MSP: 1 teen dead, another injured in Carlton Township crash
CARLTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A 17-year-old boy died after crashing into a tree in Carlton Township Saturday evening, state police say. The Freeport-area teenager was driving a pickup truck on East Brown Road west of Fry Road — about 10 miles northeast of Hastings — around 6 p.m. when he left the roadway and hit a tree. The truck then caught fire, MSP said in a statement. He was pronounced dead at the scene, MSP said. His passenger, a 16-year-old girl from the Sunfield area, was airlifted to a Grand Rapids hospital with critical injuries. State police are still investigating the crash, including whether drugs and alcohol may have been factors. They have not yet determined a cause.
