3 dead, 1 injured after speeding vehicle crashes into train car while fleeing police in Bedford Park, authorities say
CHICAGO — Three people were killed and one person was injured in Bedford Park on the city's Southwest Side overnight when their speeding vehicle plunged off a bridge while fleeing police and crashed into a train car, according to authorities. The Chicago Police Department says officers first responded to a call early Sunday morning from someone who said an unidentified offender had pointed a gun at them from their vehicle. Officers then located a vehicle matching the description and attempted a traffic stop. But police say the driver didn't stop, and officers initiated a chase that was quickly terminated. Illinois State Police then observed the same vehicle, based on description, and attempted a traffic stop in the 5500 block of South Cicero Avenue. The driver initially stopped but then fled as ISP troopers were beginning a traffic stop investigation, according to police. ISP communicated over the radio that the vehicle was fleeing, prompting CPD officers to assist. As the vehicle was fleeing police at a high rate of speed, it left the road and hit a train box car in the 6900 block of S. Cicero Ave. around 2:15 a.m., police say. Two male occupants and a female occupant in the fleeing vehicle were pronounced dead the scene. Additionally, another female occupant was taken to an area hospital in critical condition after sustaining trauma to the body. Police say no other injuries were reported, and police continue to investigate.
