Woman charged with DUI after serious motorcycle crash

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (WPRI) -- Portsmouth police are investigating a serious motor accident where one driver was charged with DUI. According to police, just after 4 p.m. Friday, crews were called for a report of a serious ,motor vehicle crash in the area of West Main and Stringham Roads. A preliminary investigation showed that the operator of the motorcycle was turning left onto Stringham Road, when they were struck by a vehicle driven by 38-year-old Lesslie McDowell, of Johnston. The motorcycle operator, who is not being identified at this time, had serious injuries and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital. At last check, they were in sable condition. McDowell was arrested and charged with Driving Under the Influence Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. She was arraigned and held on $50,000 surety bail. McDowell was ordered not to operate a motor vehicle and is epected to be re-arraigned on Monday in Second Division District Court. The accident is still under investigation.
