'We want justice': Family of 13-year-old girl killed in Shively crash seeking answers
A family is seeking answers after a deadly crash on Dixie Highway that killed 13-year-old Muna Sheikh and injured two other teenage girls.“Seeing my little sisters like that was so traumatizing,” Safia Sheikh said.“We want justice for our little sister who only made it 13 years into this world and was joyful and full of smiles and laughter,” said Nahyio Sheikh.Muna’s mother, Nadifo Musse, also wants answers. Through a translator she said, “It shouldn't take a family trying to navigate a system that they truly don't understand, and they truly don't know to get answers.”Shively police said they are committed to open communication with the victims’ families. Officers said the driver was a woman in her mid-80s, but they have not identified her. Police said criminal charges have not been ruled out as the investigation continues.Azziza’s mother, Bishro Hussein, said by translator, “if the individual was sick, if the individual, you know, was impaired, she's saying, I understand that, but accountability has to happen.”Louisville Metro Councilwoman Shameka Parrish-Wright said she will keep advocating for the family to find answers, justice and closure: “This press conference was not set up to condemn the police department but to raise awareness on what these families have been experiencing since this happened.”The family says the other girls are out of the hospital and recovering.Terrell Simmons, who witnessed the crash, says the crash should be a wake-up call to drivers to drive safely on Dixie Highway, and called for officials to make the roadway safer. “It's a highway, just like any highway. I believe they should have guardrails put up to protect the pedestrians," he said.Shively police said they are still gathering evidence and are in communication with the Commonwealth’s attorney’s office.
