SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A wrong-way driver on westbound Interstate 8 near College Avenue caused a head-on crash Wednesday morning, with authorities reporting multiple injuries. According to a Sig Alert from California Highway Patrol, the incident unfolded shortly before 10:45 a.m. when a black Mercedes SUV was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-8 before colliding head-on with another SUV near the westbound College Avenue on-ramp. CHP dispatch logs indicate multiple vehicles were involved and several injuries were reported at the scene, though the nature and severity of those injuries are not immediately known. Following the crash, the driver of the black Mercedes reportedly fled on foot, running across the College Avenue on-ramp. Video footage from the area shows an individual being detained by San Diego Police officers, though no further details have been released. CHP closed on the College Avenue on-ramp to westbound I-8 for several hours as crews worked to investigate the crash and clear debris, including the towing of damaged vehicles.
