Warsaw man facing multiple charges after fatal Duplin County crash

A Warsaw man is facing multiple charges, including felony death by vehicle, following a fatal crash in Duplin County, according to court records. Jesus Israel Lara, 21, is being charged with felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired, reckless driving to endanger, driving with an expired registration and operating a vehicle with an open container of alcohol after consuming alcohol. According to the arrest warrant, Lara reportedly caused the death of Gerardo Favela-Gonzalez unintentionally while driving impaired on S.R. 1307. Court records state the impaired driving offense was the proximate cause of the victim’s death. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Gerardo Favela-Gonzalez was a passenger in a pickup truck traveling on Beechs Mill Road on May 17 when the driver ran off the roadway, struck a ditch and overturned the vehicle. Favela-Gonzalez was ejected from the truck and died at the scene , NCSHP said. Online records also allege Lara operated a vehicle in a reckless manner that caused serious bodily injury to Gonzalez. Additional charges allege Lara was driving with an expired registration and had an open container of alcohol in the vehicle. Lara is scheduled to appear in Duplin County District Court on July 9.
