Victim of fatal crash on I-481 identified as Upstate Medical University student
Upstate Medical University identified the victim who died in a crash in DeWitt on June 29 as a student. The university identified her as Jaclyn Rittershaus. She was a student in the MD/PhD program and a member of the Norton College of Medicine and the College of Graduate Studies. "Faculty and classmates knew Jaclyn as an engaging, thoughtful, and compassionate member of our community," a letter sent to students said. "She approached both science and medicine with curiosity, kindness, and a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of others. We extend our deepest condolences to Jaclyn’s family, friends, classmates, mentors and everyone whose lives were touched by her. We ask that you keep them in your thoughts during this difficult time." Rittershaus's bio on the university's website said she became a student there in 2021 after volunteering in a lab. Multiple emergency crews responded to the crash on I-481 around 10:15 p.m. The crash shut down a section of the road for hours. Upstate said it encourages students who seek emotional support if they need it.
