Two dead after a two-vehicle crash on 72nd Street and Jefferson Avenue in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) -- Two people are dead after a two-vehicle crash between 72nd Street and Jefferson Avenue in Newport News Friday evening, according to the Newport News Police Department. On March 13 at around 10:48 p.m., Newport News Police responded to a two-vehicle crash in the area of 72nd Street and Jefferson Avenue. A 2010 Mercedes Benz traveling southbound on Jefferson Avenue at a high speed hit a 2010 Ford Edge that was turning left onto 72nd Street. The Mercedes continued from the point of impact, hitting a utility pole before slowing down at a nearby parking lot and catching on fire. The Ford Edge's driver died at the scene. The Mercedes' driver succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a local hospital. This is an ongoing investigation.
