Teenager killed, juvenile hurt in Raleigh fiery SUV crash near Brier Creek Commons shopping center
RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) -- An 18-year-old was killed in a fiery SUV crash in a shopping and hotel area near RDU Airport in northwest Raleigh on Saturday afternoon, according to the Raleigh Police Department. The crash was reported at 1:14 p.m. on Arco Corporate Drive near Macaw Street, a small road cutting through Brier Creek Commons shopping center near Target and Regal Brier Creek movie theater, officers said. Raleigh police said when officers and the Raleigh Fire Department arrived on scene, they found a 2022 white Chevy Blazer that had struck a tree and was on fire in the roadway. A preliminary investigation suggests the SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed, exited the roadway to the right, struck two trees and then partially burned, police said. According to Raleigh police, the driver, 18-year-old Abraham Karim Manrique Ponce, was not wearing a seat belt during the crash and was ejected from the vehicle. Police said a juvenile passenger wearing a seat belt was seated in the front right passenger seat and was able to exit the SUV independently. According to police, the juvenile was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Ponce was transported to a local hospital but died due to injuries sustained in the crash, police said. Macaw Street extends from the shopping center to The Westin Raleigh-Durham Airport hotel and a Hampton Inn along Arco Corporate Drive. Macaw Street was closed for an extended period after the wreck while officers continued to investigate the crash. Police said the investigation is ongoing.
