Spring Valley resident discovers new passion in adaptive sports 2 years post-injury
Charles Baker, who became paraplegic after an off-road vehicle accident two years ago, attributes adaptive sports to providing him a fresh outlook on life. Baker, now 26, often spends Monday mornings riding his hand cycle at a park in Spring Valley, California. Expressing the significance of adaptive sports in his life, Baker shared, "It means everything to me." He reflects on his journey from the accident near Ocotillo Wells in 2023, acknowledging initial challenges and dark moments in his recovery. Baker, formerly a depressed electrician, found solace and support through the Triumph Foundation, a nonprofit organization offering resources for those with spinal cord injuries. Introduced to adaptive sports by the foundation, Baker delved into activities like hand cycling, adaptive mountain biking, and adaptive skiing. Serving as an ambassador for the program, Baker was honored as Athlete of the Year at a sports festival in April. Grateful for the community and unconditional support he has received, Baker is now contemplating competing in sports and exploring new endeavors like surfing. A GoFundMe page has been established to assist Baker and his family in adapting their home.
