One dead, others injured in downtown Columbus crash

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- One person is dead and at least two others injured after a crash in the Weinland Park neighborhood of Columbus Wednesday afternoon. According to a Columbus police dispatcher, the single-vehicle crash was reported at approximately 2:40 p.m. on the 1300 block of North High Street, between the Short North and the University District. A Columbus Police Sgt. Joseph Albert said a man driving a Ford Mustang sped through the intersection of High Street and 7th Avenue, running a red light and hitting two people on the sidewalk near the intersection. The car then ran into a Kroger parking lot, landing on top of a parked car with one person inside it. The two people on the sidewalk were taken to a local hospital in critical condition, but one of them was pronounced dead at 3:14 p.m., Albert said. The person in the parked car was also taken to the hospital in stable condition. The driver of the Mustang was treated for injuries at the scene, then arrested. Police believe the driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash; he is currently being held on a driving under the influence. Police have not identified the victims or the suspect at this time. High Street in the area of 7th Avenue will be closed as investigators process the crash scene.
