Southbound lanes of Silver Strand, SR-75 closed after collision leaves bicyclist dead

CORONADO, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- All southbound lanes of Silver Strand Blvd. at Tulagi of State Route 75 are closed after a collision on Tuesday afternoon left a 78-year-old bicyclist dead, according to the Coronado Police Department (CPD). According to CPD, at around 1:37 p.m., officers responded to a 911 call reporting a traffic collision involving a car and a bicyclist on the Silver Strand Highway near Tulagi Road. When officers arrived at the scene, they attempted life-saving measures on the bicyclist, but they died at the scene, CPD says. The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene and reportedly attempted to render aid to the bicyclist, as did bystanders. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be contributing factors in the crash, according to CPD, and the incident is under investigation. CPD says that the southbound lanes of SR-75 at Tulagi are expected to remain closed for several hours as investigators process the scene. Traffic is being turned around at Tarawa Road and diverted to the Coronado Bridge. Traffic is seen backed up for miles, even as far as Coronado High School, which is located 3 miles away from the incident.. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use an alternate route if possible. This is a developing story; please check back for updates.
