Power outage in North Windham

A fatal car crash into a building caused a gas leak, which led to the evacuation of several buildings, the closure of Rt 115, and the shutting down of power to thousands of customers. The driver of that car died at the scene. The name of the driver and vehicle information is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. According to Windham Police, the reconstruction of the accident indicated that the driver crossed the center line and hit an apartment building, affecting its natural gas meter and causing a gas leak. The apartment building and several nearby residences were evacuated while emergency crews were working on the site and shutting down the gas lines. Route 115 (Tandberg Trail) was closed to traffic for almost five hours. Central Maine Power shut down power to thousands in the North Windham area to ensure the safety of crews working with the gas lines as well as local residents and first responders. Power was knocked out to nearly 3,000 customers for more than five hours. Windham Police thanked residents for their patience during the shutdowns. Tandberg Trail is now open and CMP is restoring power as quickly as possible.
