Police arrest Troutdale man after car crashes into SE Portland Sherwin-Williams, 2 hurt

Portland police arrested a suspect in a crash into a Southeast Portland business that caused extensive damage and injured two people. Police responded to reports of a vehicle crash into a Sherwin-Williams Paint Store , located in the 9700 block of SE Division Street in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood, at around 4:45 Tuesday afternoon. Two people were injured by flying debris, according to police. Those injuries are not life-threatening, investigators said. Police said the driver, later identified as 55-year-old John Graff of Troutdale, left the scene on foot. As police were responding, they received a report of a home burglary in progress in the 2000 block of Southeast 97th Avenue, where Graff was found and arrested. Police determined after the crash, and before breaking into the home, Graff also hid a loaded revolver inside a mailbox in the 2100 block of Southeast 98th Avenue, which officers recovered. Graff was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on multiple charges of reckless endangerment, felon in possession of a firearm, first-degree burglary, third-degree assault, first-degree criminal mischief, failure to perform the duties of a driver, and driving under the influence of intoxicants (DUII). “This incident could have had far more serious consequences,” said PPB Chief Bob Day. “I’m grateful for the swift response by our officers, the quick actions of the resident who called 911, and the coordinated efforts that led to the suspect’s arrest and the recovery of a loaded firearm before anyone else was harmed.” Anyone with information about this incident is asked to submit a tip online.
