One killed, several injured in Crown Point crash

CROWN POINT | A two-vehicle accident in Crown Point claimed the life of a Maryland man, left his passenger in critical condition and several local residents injured Tuesday evening. New York State Police said the accident happened at about 6 p.m. at the intersection of State Route 9N and Bridge Road in the town of Crown Point. A preliminary investigation determined that a green 2019 Toyota Prius, operated by Larry J. Smith, 69, of Baltimore, Maryland, was traveling westbound on Bridge Road approaching the intersection with State Route 9N.   After entering the intersection, his vehicle collided with a northbound black 2012 Toyota Highlander operated by Charles A. Robertson, 48, of Port Henry. Passengers in the Highlander were Brandon J. Chappell, 30, of Port Henry, and Ryan P. Boepple, 33, of Port Henry.  Also in the Prius was passenger Ruth E. Smith, 62, of Baltimore, Maryland. Larry J. Smith sustained severe injuries. Members of the Crown Point Volunteer Fire Department and Ticonderoga EMS immediately initiated lifesaving measures; however, Smith was pronounced deceased at the scene. Ruth E. Smith was transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, where she remains listed in critical condition. Robertson, Chappell, and Boepple were transported to Moses-Ludington Hospital in Ticonderoga with non-life-threatening injuries. New York State Police were assisted at the scene by the Crown Point Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, Ticonderoga Volunteer Fire Department, Port Henry Volunteer Fire Department, Ticonderoga Emergency Medical Services, Moriah Emergency Medical Services, Lamoille Emergency Medical Services, and the Ticonderoga Police Department. The investigation into the collision remains ongoing.
