Milwaukee police arrest teen in fatal hit-and-run near King Park

Milwaukee police arrested a 17-year-old boy Thursday morning after a hit-and-run near King Park left a 35-year-old man dead. The crash happened at 13th Street and McKinley Avenue, where witnesses said the victim, who lived in a nearby homeless encampment, was walking across the street when a car swerving recklessly struck him and kept going. "I heard something, like boom! And I heard the car speeding," one witness named Alfonzo said. Emergency responders attempted to revive the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. "It's a shame. It hurt my heart when I heard, when I seen them put the tarp over his head, and I knew he was dead. And it's just sad, it's really sad. They treated him like they run over a squirrel or something and just kept going. Just left him there to die," Alfonzo said.Police located the suspected vehicle a short time later, a few blocks away at 15th Street and Cherry Avenue. Witnesses said at least four people ran from the car, but officers arrested one of them, a 17-year-old boy. A dent in the hood of the car was visible near the headlight, and police confirmed the vehicle was involved in the fatal crash. "He was swerving and he hit dude and he kept going," said Jim, who lived with the victim at the homeless encampment. He described the car as weaving wildly across all lanes before hitting his friend and continuing on. "Like the guy was a piece of trash. And he's not. He's a human being. They should have stopped. They should have stopped and taken responsibility of what they did. At least get him help," Jim said. Police said the car does not appear to have been stolen. The owner was at the scene and said her son had borrowed the car without her permission. She said her son told her another boy was driving at the time of the crash, but he was also in the car when the victim was killed. No criminal charges have been filed, but the 17-year-old remains in custody. The identity of the 35-year-old victim has not yet been released.Top HeadlinesArmed intruder breaks into Milwaukee home, sexually assaults one homeownerSade Robinson's younger sister is accepted to Harvard 'He was such a light': Parents of Sussex boy run over by school bus speak about their sonWATCH Video shows officers confronting axe-wielding man inside Milwaukee church
