Little Rock man sentenced to 25-years for 2024 fatal wrong-way crash on I-430
After pleading to the First-Degree Murder of 27-year-old Clifford James Griffin in 2024, 26-year-old Anthony B. Smith has been sentenced to 25 years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections. On September 19, 2024, Smith was driving a BMW 325 along Interstate 430 near Colonel Glenn Road, when he crashed head-on into Griffin who was driving a Jeep. Griffin was pronounced dead at the scene. After the crash, Smith would leave law enforcement on a high speed pursuit eastbound on Interstate 30, reaching speeds greater than 125 mph. Benton Police initially began the pursuit, before requesting the assistance of Arkansas State Police. During the pursuit, Smith would drive through the construction zone at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour, drive the wrong way down I-30, I-430, and exit ramp. A Trooper would attempt a tactical vehicle intervention on Smith, but Smith was able to avoid it and continue traveling north on I-430 South. The sentence, which was imposed by Pulaski County Circuit Judge Karen Whatley, will be 100 percent served in accordance with the Protect Arkansas Act, and will run consecutively with a 10-year sentence he had received from Saline County.
