'Milwaukee man facing allegations for card cracking while incarcerated'

A man from Milwaukee, who was already serving time in prison for causing a fatal crash, is facing additional charges for allegedly scamming people and banks out of tens of thousands of dollars in a fraudulent check-cashing scheme prior to the crash. According to prosecutors, Jaquon Benson, 27, engaged in a criminal operation known as "card cracking" by cashing fraudulent checks at ATMs across the Milwaukee area. He has been charged with six felonies related to this scheme. The investigation revealed that Benson recruited someone to steal checks from USPS drop boxes, modified them to cash out significant amounts of money, and then used social media to recruit individuals to deposit the checks into their bank accounts. Benson would then attempt to withdraw the money from these accounts at ATMs. Despite some banks having security measures in place to prevent fraud, Benson was able to cash out close to $61,000. He was eventually caught in May 2024 for driving a stolen car and causing a fatal crash while fleeing from officers. Benson received a prison sentence of over ten years for these crimes.
