Man turns himself in 2 months after fatal crash on I-69

Video shows March coverage of the crash GRANT COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) - A man turned himself in two months after allegedly driving under the influence on Interstate 69, killing a man and severely injuring the victim's wife. Lucas Wiemer, 32, faces felony counts of reckless homicide; causing death when operating a vehicle with a Schedule I or II controlled substance in the blood; causing serious injury when operating a vehicle with a Schedule I or II controlled substance in the blood; and a misdemeanor count of reckless driving. Around 6:30 a.m. on March 10, deputies with the Grant County Sheriff's Office responded to the crash on the interstate near the 272 mile-marker, north of Van Buren, on the edge of Grant and Huntington counties. The initial investigation determined a pickup truck, allegedly driven by Wiemer, was trying to pass a semitrailer and veered away from the lanes, crashing into a pickup truck that was parked on the side of the highway because it had broken down with a man and his wife inside. Joseph Kidwell, 45, of Marion was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife and another person had to be taken to a Fort Wayne hospital for treatment of serious injuries. It's unclear if the other person hospitalized was Wiemer himself; WANE 15 has reached out to authorities to clarify. The sheriff's office said Wiemer, from the Muncie area, turned himself in Monday evening. Wiemer's bond will be set at his initial court hearing, which is scheduled for Wednesday.
