Man dies after vehicle hits utility pole, Westwood motel

A man died after his vehicle struck a utility pole and a motel on Route 1 in Westwood, Massachusetts, on Monday, police said.Police responded at 4 p.m. to the Budget Inn, where they found a sport utility vehicle that had struck a pole and the hotel before the vehicle flipped over. The driver, a 32-year-old man from Walpole, was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. His name was not released. Video from Sky5 showed what appeared to be a white SUV rolled over in front of the Budget Inn Motel with significant damage. A knocked-over telephone pole was seen near the rolled-over car. Debris from the crash was also scattered around the car. A witness told NewsCenter 5 they saw the car take out the telephone pole before going airborne and bouncing off the side of the motel. "It crashed into the top of the hotel and then bounced back down to the ground," Donna Livingstone said.Those who felt the crash and saw its aftermath."When it hit, I heard it, and it felt like it was an earthquake, and I ran outside, and I saw the car there," said Jeannean Socha, who works at the motel. Eversource said a handful of customers lost power as a result of the crash, including the Budget Inn. It is not the first time a driver has crashed into the motel. In 2021, surveillance video showed an RV barreling through the parking lot and slamming into the motel office. The driver survived and was charged with operating under the influence.
