Man charged with murder after woman dies following Raleigh crash on Capital Boulevard: Court records
RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A California man accused of causing a crash that injured two women in Raleigh last month is now facing a second-degree murder charge after one of the women died, court records show. According to the Raleigh Police Department, the crash happened at the intersection of Capital Boulevard and Highwoods Boulevard around 7:20 p.m. on March 21. An investigation determined that a pickup truck hit the front driver's side of an SUV while the SUV driver was trying to turn on Capital Boulevard. One of the women in the SUV, Reganne Elizabeth Johnson, suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Another woman was hospitalized with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, according to Raleigh police. Court records show Johnson later died from her injuries. Police said the pickup truck driver, 37-year-old Chancellor Van Oden, was arrested at the scene. On Tuesday, according to court records, he was indicted on the following charges: Two days later, on Thursday, court records show Van Oden was indicted for second-degree murder in Johnson's death. Van Oden, who has been in custody at the Wake County Detention Center since his arrest on a $1.5 million secured bond, was not given bond on the murder charge, according to court records. According to records, Van Oden is scheduled to return to Wake County court next Monday, April 13.
