Man accused of Ubering home after fatal crash that killed Hillsborough teen
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A man was arrested on Thursday in connection with a fatal crash that occurred in Seffner on April 11. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, at 10:56 p.m. on that day, a Nissan Versa driven by a 40-year-old man was traveling east on State Road 574. At the same time, a Volkswagen Passat driven by a 17-year-old was traveling west on SR-574. FHP reports that the Nissan was traveling West of Chastain Road when it veered into the west lane and collided nearly head-on with the Volkswagen. The impact rotated both vehicles before they came to a rest in the roadway. FHP reported that the Volkswagen was then struck by a third vehicle, a Ford F150, that was traveling west as well. Following the crash, the driver of the Ford fled the scene and their identity was unknown. The drivers of the Nissan and the Volkswagen both sustained serious injuries in the crash and were taken to a nearby hospital. The 17-year-old driver of the Volkswagen later died due to his injuries. After an investigation, FHP states that the driver of the Ford, identified as 27-year-old Christopher Gage Everson was arrested at 11 a.m. on Thursday. An investigation into the crash, according to FHP, determined that Everson walked away from the crash before callling an Uber rideshare. FHP said that the Uber then took Everson and his 8-year-old son to his St. Petersburg home. Everson was taken and booked into the Hillsborough County Jail. He was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving a death, which is a felony, failure to register a motor vehicle, no proof of insurance, following too closely, and not wearing a seatbelt.
