Mackenzie Shirilla murder conviction in Strongsville crash the focus of new Netflix documentary
[Editor's Note: The video above is of the Mackenzie Shirilla verdict.] STRONGSVILLE, Ohio (WJW) – A Northeast Ohio case is now the subject of a Netflix documentary examining the 2022 high-speed crash in Strongsville that killed two teenagers and led to a murder conviction for the driver, Mackenzie Shirilla. The crash killed 19-year-old Davion Flanagan, who was a recent Strongsville High School graduate, and Shirilla’s boyfriend, 20-year-old Dominic Russo. Shirilla was 17 at the time of the accident on July 31, 2022. She was convicted on two counts of murder and multiple related charges in 2023. Prosecutors said she intentionally accelerated her vehicle to 100 mph and crashed into a brick building in Strongsville. The FOX 8 I-Team has covered the case extensively. Investigators used vehicle “black box” data to conclude Shirilla pressed the accelerator to full throttle and did not brake before impact, according to court testimony presented during trial. Jurors found her guilty on 12 counts. The new Netflix documentary released on May 15 revisits the case and includes prison interviews with Shirilla, who maintains the crash was not intentional. “Anyone can see there’s no intent,” Shirilla said in the interview. Shirilla maintains she has no memory of the crash. “I have no recollection of that morning,” she said. "I have no recollection of that morning, but I know it wasn't intentional," she said a second time. “I just wanna say my truth,” she said. “I am not a monster…I am not a murderer.” Shirilla described her relationship with Dom as “young love” and “rocky but good.” Shirilla’s attorneys have continued to appeal her conviction, though courts have upheld the verdict.
