Identification of pedestrian and dog killed in Huntington Beach collision.
Huntington Beach police are currently looking into a traffic incident that occurred on Springale Avenue earlier this week. The collision involved a driver hitting and fatally injuring a 71-year-old pedestrian and his dog, leading to the closure of all northbound lanes for a few hours. The event happened near the Springdale and Brannen Drive intersection before 6:30 a.m., with a white Ford F250 pickup striking the pedestrian. The victim, identified as Kurt George Nickel, was found unresponsive by paramedics and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, a 37-year-old local resident, stayed at the site and assisted the investigation. Authorities have ruled out drug or alcohol impairment for the driver, although the pedestrian's potential impairment is still under investigation. The pedestrian and his dog were not in a crosswalk at the time of the accident. The closure of northbound lanes was required for about 3.5 hours to allow for a detailed investigation by HBPD's Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team. Witnesses to the incident are urged to contact HBPD Traffic Investigator Vishal Rattanchandani.
