(WAVY) -- Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue responded to a crash Sunday afternoon, where a Hampton Roads Transit bus operating Route 103 and a passenger vehicle were involved in a crash at the intersection of S. Little Back River Road and Settlers Landing Road in Hampton. Initial callers reported that the bus had exited the roadway and struck a tree, officials say. Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue (HDFR) units arrived on scene at 3:49 p.m. to find the bus driver pinned within the vehicle that resulted in significant injuries. Numerous emergency personnel were still on scene around 5:45p.m. During the prolonged rescue, York County Fire and Rescue was requested to provide whole blood for field administration to provide lifesaving care. The high-level intervention is a capability for which HDFR recently completed training and is now integrating into standard field operations No passengers were on board at the time, according to officials. The bus operator was transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center for treatment. Sentara’s Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance was dispatched to the scene with a trauma surgeon on board to provide patient care. After the driver was extricated from the vehicle, HDFR crews transported the patient to an established landing zone, where Nightingale airlifted the patient to a regional trauma center for further treatment. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. WAVY has received photos from a 10 On Your Side viewer showing the aftermath of the crash.
