FHP: Woman 26, killed following wrong-way crash on the turnpike in Indian River County

Video above: News and weather for Sunday, May 10, 2026The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a collision that led to a death.According to a report from FHP, on Saturday, May 9 at 10:05 p.m., a 26-year-old woman from Fort Pierce was driving a white Kia K4 Sedan south going the wrong way on the Florida's Turnpike. A Grey GMC Canyon and a Black Kia Pacifica were traveling north on the turnpike side-by-side in two lanes. The front of the K4 struck the Pacifica minivan. The impact pushed the K4 to the grass median.The Pacifica rotated and collided with the left side of the GMC. The GMC was able to stop on its own, while the Pacifica continued to rotate before it came to a stop.According to the report, the 26-year-old woman driver of the K4 was pronounced dead at the scene by St. Lucie County Fire District personnel. Other victims in the K4 were a 5-year-0ld boy (non-life-threating injuries), and a 3-year-old boy (life-threatening injuries).The driver of the Pacifica, a 22-year-old man from Margate, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. A 24-year-old woman, a 50-year-old woman and a 74-year-old woman, all passengers in the Pacifica from Royal Palm Beach, sustained non-life threatening injures.The driver of the GMC, a 48-year-old man from Mount Dora, was not injured. A 23-year-old man from Mount Dora who was a passenger in the GMC was uninjured, while a 46-year-old woman passenger in the GMC from Dora Florida sustained minor injuries.The FHP said the multiple people injured, were taken to HCH Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce for treatment.The roadway reopened Sunday at 6:15 a.m.Get the latest news updates with the WPBF 25 News app. You can download it here.
