Fatal crash kills 3-year-old in Ohio: Woman crashed vehicle into outdoor dining area of restaurant

BEACHWOOD, Ohio (WJW) -- A 3-year-old girl has died and two people have been charged following a crash into an outdoor dining area in Beachwood over the weekend, police confirmed Tuesday, June 23. Beachwood police said an investigation revealed an 18-year-old woman was driving through the Pavilion Shopping Center parking lot on Sunday at about 1:30 p.m., when her vehicle hopped a curb and she drove into where people were eating outside at City Barbeque. According to a criminal complaint, the teen was driving in reverse when they went over the curb, hit a fence and multiple pedestrians on the patio, including a little girl there with her family on Father's Day. The child was transported to the hospital for treatment but died of her injuries, police said. Her parents were treated for minor injuries. Police have identified the driver as Jasmine McFadden of Euclid, and said she has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide. McFadden was arraigned Tuesday in Shaker Heights Municipal Court, and did not offer a plea. Her bond was set at $100,000. Court documents show the woman did not have a driver's license. Police said a 61-year-old passenger in the vehicle -- identified as Kenneth McFadden, Jasmine's father -- initially told officials he was the one driving, but surveillance footage showed otherwise. He has since been charged with obstructing official business and wrongful entrustment. His arraignment is set for next month, after posting $10,000 bond. "The Beachwood Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the child's family and loved ones," Beachwood Police Chief Dan Grispino wrote in a statement. "We also recognize the impact of this incident on family members, witnesses, first responders, restaurant employees and others affected by this tragedy." An investigation into what led to the crash is ongoing.
