Fatal accident on U.S. 280 near Cherokee Road
All lanes of traffic heading eastbound on U.S. 280 were shut down in the Mountain Brook area on Sunday following a fatal accident. According to the Alabama Department of Transportation, the incident occurred around 1:20 p.m. The Rocky Ridge Fire Department reported that a vehicle traveling in the westbound direction near Cherokee Road veered out of control and collided with a median barrier. Two individuals were in the vehicle during the crash; sadly, one individual passed away at the scene while the other was transported to UAB Hospital with severe injuries. Emergency responders, including Mountain Brook Fire and Police, Homewood Police and Fire, and Alabama State Troopers, were present. As of 3:20 p.m., all eastbound lanes were closed, with police redirecting traffic onto Shades Creek Parkway. For further updates, please refer to the interactive traffic map.
