Fatal accident on I-79 involved Slippery Rock University student returning to campus

The tragic accident on Interstate 79 in Mercer County that claimed the life of a 22-year-old Slippery Rock University student, Austin Golab from Erie, occurred last week. The crash involved multiple vehicles and took place on Jan. 15 in Jackson Township. According to authorities, the incident happened during hazardous white out conditions when two semi-trailers collided, leading to Golab's fatal accident. Golab, who had recently resumed his studies in cybersecurity at Slippery Rock, was on his way back to school when the heartbreaking accident occurred. Before his enrollment at Slippery Rock, he had a brief academic stint at Gannon University and had also served in the United States National Guard, including a deployment to Africa. Known for his kind and friendly demeanor, Golab was described as an easy-going and supportive individual by his loved ones. A dedicated gym-goer and enthusiast of biking and spending time with friends, he left a lasting impact on those around him. Austin is survived by his parents, Melissa Golab and Michael Golab, as well as his sister, Jordan Golab. A visitation and funeral service are planned for this Friday, and in remembrance of Austin, his family kindly asks for sharing cherished memories on the funeral home's website.
