Driver pleads guilty after meth found in system in fatal 2023 crash

A man from Waskom, Texas, named Rodney Dan Lemay, pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide in a 2023 traffic accident that resulted in the death of another person. Lemay, who is 60 years old, admitted to the charge on January 12, 2026, during his trial at Caddo District Court. The incident occurred on July 18, 2023, when Lemay drove home from work and veered across the road, crashing into a vehicle driven by Jeffrey Merritt, who was also 60 years old. Unfortunately, Merritt was killed in the collision. Lemay tested positive for methamphetamine in his system at the time of the accident. District Judge Chris Victory sentenced Lemay to 10 years of hard labor, with a portion of the sentence to be served without the possibility of early release. Lemay was also fined $2,000. Assistant District Attorney Courtney N. Ray was responsible for prosecuting the case.
