Driver killed in high-speed crash on Murfreesboro Pike

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A motorist was killed in a high-speed crash on Murfreesboro Pike in South Nashville Monday evening. The crash happened at the intersection of Murfreesboro Pike and Town Park Drive, which is near Donelson Pike, around 6:30 p.m. According to court documents, a silver Lexus RX350 was attempting to turn left onto Murfreesboro Pike from Faircloth Drive when it was hit by a black Tesla driven by 22-year-Ali Al-Attabi. The Tesla, which was traveling southbound, struck the Lexus on the rear passenger side and spun the vehicle at least one-and-a-half times before stopping near Town Park Drive. The driver of the Lexus, who officers said was not wearing his seat belt, was thrown from the car. He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died from his injuries. The victim was later identified as 38-year-old Bankole Olupinla. Al-Attabi told crash investigators he believed he was going 70 mph at the time of the crash when the posted speed limit is 45 mph. He claimed he sped up after a vehicle cut him off and he attempted to pass it, according to Metro police. Al-Attabi was booked into the Metro jail and charged with vehicular homicide via reckless conduct. His bond was set at $75,000.
