Driver arrested in deadly Pittsfield hit-and-run crash

PITTSFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A suspect has been charged with homicide in connection with a deadly hit-and-run crash in Pittsfield last week. On February 10 at approximately 11:30 p.m., Pittsfield officers were called to the area of Linden Street and Francis Avenue regarding reports of a pedestrian struck in the roadway. Police arriving in the area could not locate a vehicle or victim and began canvassing the area and speaking to witnesses. The victim was eventually found on the roadway near the 1350 block of West Housatonic Street. Police determined that the victim was trapped underneath the vehicle after being struck and dragged for a long distance before coming to rest where he was found. The driver then left the area. The victim, who was killed in the crash, was identified by the Berkshire District Attorney's Office as 69-year-old William Colbert of Pittsfield. Following an extensive investigation, the Pittsfield Police Department stated that the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run was located on Monday. Officers arrested the suspect, identified as 65-year-old William Gross of Hancock, without incident. Gross will be arraigned at a future date in Central Berkshire District Court on the charges of Motor Vehicle Homicide and Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident Resulting in Personal Injury or Death.
