DeLand man in custody after hit-and-run with Volusia fire truck, officials say

A 27-year-old DeLand man was taken into custody Tuesday after a hit-and-run involving a Volusia County fire truck, according to the sheriff's office and Florida Highway Patrol. The hit-and-run occurred around 4 p.m. on International Speedway Boulevard, south of Indian Lake Road, where troopers were investigating a separate rollover crash involving a 44-year-old Miami man, FHP said in a statement. With a roadblock in the area as Volusia County Fire Rescue responded to the rollover crash, the DeLand man who was driving a 2020 Honda Civic that allegedly failed to stop, struck Volusia County Fire Truck 15, and continued on International Speedway Boulevard, according to FHP and the sheriff's office. Thomas Holley said he was on his way home from work, driving down International Speedway Boulevard, and saw the pursuit that followed. “I drove by the accident where there was a vehicle rolled over in the ditch that emergency responders were responding to, and then I’d say like maybe five minutes down the road the red Honda flew by me doing at least 100 miles an hour followed by three police officers chasing after him,” Holley said.Troopers and the sheriff's office pursued the Civic to International Speedway Boulevard's intersection with Amelia Avenue in DeLand, where it ran off the roadway and struck a pole, according to FHP. The crash appeared to have separated the Civic from its engine block, which was pictured several feet away from the wrecked vehicle: A woman who didn't want to be identified saw some of the pursuit and crash. Saying, "My car literally shook as he went by, and then the cops are there, and the car it hit you know the worst noise ever," she said. She said the driver got out of the car, "and they chased after him,".The DeLand man, later identified by the sheriff's office as 27-year-old Jamal Anthony Riascos, then tried to run away from the scene but was apprehended by a trooper and taken into custody, according to FHP. He was in the hospital at last check and will face charges including leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage, reckless driving, resisting without violence, and violation of probation, troopers said, adding the sheriff's office would likely have separate charges for a passenger who was also allegedly involved in the incident. No firefighters were injured in the hit-and-run crash, according to FHP. The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said at one point Riascos stopped to let out two passengers during the pursuit. FHP said at least one passenger was arrested.
