Crash call turns into death investigation after two found shot in Pittsylvania County home

What first responders initially believed was a car crash on East Gretna Road in Pittsylvania County turned into a death investigation after two people were found shot inside a home. Broadcastify audio obtained by ABC13 tells parts of the story. Pittsylvania County first responders were dispatched Saturday afternoon to the 12000 block of East Gretna Road. According to Broadcastify records, they responded to a 'crash notification.' A crash notification is, oftentimes, an automatic alert from a vehicle or cellphone that can signal a possible wreck. The Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office said it is still investigating what triggered the crash notification. In the Broadcastify audio captured, you can hear a first responder saying, “We’ve got a vehicle into a structure. I’ll be out checking for injuries.” According to the sheriff’s office, while searching for anyone who may have been hurt, first responders found the bodies of 34-year-old Cody Saltsman and 35-year-old Caitlin Unterman, who appeared to have been shot. They also say, "It's probably not going to be a vehicle crash." The sheriff’s office said both Unterman and Saltsman lived at the home and appeared to have died from gunshot wounds. An autopsy will help determine the exact cause and manner of death. ABC13 was able to speak to Unterman’s friend and former coworker, Owen Onderdonk, who said she brought joy to those around her. “When you see her, you just kind of light up, you just wanted to be around her,” Onderdonk said. He said Unterman was a teacher with him at the LCS Online Academy and that learning what happened left him shocked. “It was like I was punched in the gut, it was like the wind was knocked out of me,” Onderdonk said. Onderdonk said he hopes people remember Unterman for her passion in life. “She gave, she was a giver. She gave everything she got,” he said. The sheriff's office said they believe the two who died were in the truck when it hit the home, and they believe they know which of the two was driving, but they are waiting on the medical examiner's report to confirm their initial findings. They also tell us they are still working to understand what led up to the incident on Saturday. "Investigators have interviewed multiple individuals throughout today, attempting to parse together the two victims’ patterns of life to better understand their relationships. The interviews will continue," Sheriff Mike Taylor told ABC13 in a statement. The Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation is ongoing.
