Convicted felon on parole faces homicide charges after wrong-way crash kills woman on Murfreesboro Pike

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A Tennessee parolee with a long criminal history is now facing multiple homicide-related charges after a wrong-way crash on Murfreesboro Pike killed a young woman. "We know Ray Eugene Padgett has some 20 convictions," Metro Nashville Police Department spokesperson Don Aaron said. "Felony convictions." Investigators said the series of events began around 9:30 Friday morning when Padgett allegedly stole a Ford truck from an auto lot in North Nashville. The owner told police the vehicle was equipped with a tracking device and began following it. Around 12:10 p.m., police said the owner tracked the truck to St. Louis Street, where Padgett rammed into him. Using that information, officers began monitoring Padgett in Madison with undercover vehicles. But police said the situation quickly escalated when Padgett rammed into an undercover officer near Nashville International Airport. That officer was forced to get out and run, described by police as being in clear and immediate danger. Moments later, a pursuit began. About five minutes later, Padgett drove the wrong way on Murfreesboro Pike at speeds approaching 80 miles per hour, heading toward La Vergne. That is when, police said, he crashed into an SUV as a woman in her 20s was turning into a subdivision. She was killed. Police said the woman was driving home from work. “We believe he continues to be on parole and was on parole this morning when he stole the truck and set off the horrible, horrible chain of events that claimed the life of a young Nashville woman who was turning into the subdivision to go home,” Metro police spokesperson Don Aaron said. Investigators said Padgett has roughly 20 prior felony convictions across multiple Tennessee counties, including Davidson, Putnam, Sumner and Wilson. Those convictions include burglaries, auto-related crimes and multiple theft offenses. Police said Padgett was last arrested in Nashville in 2023 for a parole violation and had since been released. Padgett is currently hospitalized and will be booked into jail upon his release. Padgett is charged with criminally negligent homicide, vehicular homicide by recklessness and felony reckless endangerment. Additional charges are anticipated.
