Caltrans workers rescue driver after car crashes into maintenance truck on 5 Freeway

Caltrans workers rescued the driver of a vehicle that crashed into the back of a maintenance truck while crews were doing work on the 5 Freeway in the San Fernando Valley Thursday morning. The collision first reported at approximately 10:50 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the freeway in Pacoima, near the 118 Freeway. Sky5's Rich Prickett was over the scene at 11:30 a.m., where both Caltrans and the CHP were seen responding. There was extensive damage to the grey sedan. Caltrans tells KTLA that several District 7 electrical maintenance trucks and workers were on site repairing a damaged light pole when the vehicle crashed into one of their parked trucks. The vehicle reportedly caught fire, and Caltrans workers pulled the driver from his vehicle.The driver was transported to the hospital and is in unknown condition. Caltrans said no workers were injured. Several lanes of the freeway were blocked off as of 12:30 p.m., according to the CHP. There's currently a traffic backup on the northbound side of the 5 Freeway.
