Bond set for suspect in Pepper Pike drunk driving crash that killed North Randall firefighter

CLEVELAND (WJW) -- A man charged in a drunk driving crash in Pepper Pike that killed a local firefighter and injured a woman over the weekend is now being held on a $150,000 bond. Joseph Simmons, 26, of Geneva, was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide in the crash near the intersection of Fairmount Boulevard and Brainard Road, which happened in the early hours of Saturday, July 18, according to police. Officers who responded to the scene found three crashed vehicles and a man and woman between two of the vehicles. Both suffered serious injuries, according to police. The woman was transported to a hospital, where she was later listed in stable condition, according to police. The man, identified as 29-year-old Cameron Duvall of Northfield, was pronounced dead at the scene. Duvall was a firefighter for the village of North Randall. He joined the department in 2022, according to officials. Investigators learned Duvall and the woman had stopped to assist a driver after his or her car got a flat tire. Both were struck while standing near the truck of the disabled vehicle. "[Duvall's] dedication, professionalism, and willingness to serve others exemplified the very best of our department and our Village," reads a Saturday statement from the fire department. "Cameron's loss is deeply felt by his fellow firefighters, police officer[s], Village employees, elected officials, and the entire North Randall community." FOX 8 News was there when Duvall was transported to the funeral home. Watch here: Simmons was arrested and charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault, operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and failure to maintain an assured clear distance ahead. Simmons did not enter a plea at his Monday arraignment in Shaker Heights Municipal Court, court officials told FOX 8 News. A judge set his bond at $150,000. His case is now expected to go before a Cuyahoga County grand jury for possible indictment.
