Affidavit: Woman charged following fatal hit-and-run in downtown Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Police arrested a woman Monday following an investigation into a fatal hit-and-run that occurred June 12 in downtown Austin. According to an arrest warrant affidavit, 34-year-old Martha Maria Flores was charged with collision involving death, which is a second-degree felony. The charge was in connection with the death of a man whom police identified as Jonathan Hernandez, 33. On June 12, first responders arrived at the scene of a crash in the 600 block of N. Interstate 35 Service Road. Medics with Austin-Travis County EMS found an injured pedestrian. That person was taken to the hospital but later died. “The suspect vehicle never slowed down upon striking the pedestrian, launching him into the air, causing vehicle debris to break off of the car, including the lower right fog light, which was located at the scene,” the affidavit said. Austin Police said it was investigating the incident as the city’s 37th fatal crash of 2026. Court documents said investigators connected Flores to the crash using surveillance camera footage in the area, evidence collected at the scene, and a 911 tip reporting a suspicious vehicle that matched the damage and description of the suspect vehicle. Documents said police found a damaged vehicle under a blue trap at an apartment complex in northwest Austin. The vehicle was registered under Flores, and during an interview with investigators, she said she was the only person who drove the car. “Upon execution of a search warrant on the suspect vehicle, blood and brain matter were observed on the broken windshield that was covered up by the blue tarp,” the affidavit said. Documents said Flores told police she reported the collision, but the 911 call she placed "did not save in her phone." However, investigators determined no calls regarding a collision were placed from the address or Flores' cellphone number. As of Thursday, Flores remained booked in Travis County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
