6 killed, including 2 children, in fiery head-on crash in Hill County

Six people, including two children, were killed Saturday afternoon when a car attempting to pass another vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a van on a rural Hill County highway, the Texas Department of Public Safety said. The crash occurred around 4:33 p.m. on State Highway 171 near FM 3155, between Bynum and Malone. A Nissan traveling northbound on SH 171 attempted to pass another vehicle and collided head-on with an approaching Ford van, according to TxDPS. Both vehicles became fully engulfed in flames. A fifth occupant, a child, was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Both occupants of the Nissan also died, bringing the total number of deaths to six. Next of kin had not been notified and no names were released. The investigation remains active and ongoing. Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Hill County Sheriff's Office, Texas Highway Patrol, Bynum Fire Department, Hillsboro Fire/Rescue, Penelope Fire Department, Careflite EMS and the Texas Department of Transportation. The highway was closed in all directions south of Bynum before reopening later Saturday evening.
