20-year-old motorcyclist killed in south Asheville crash, investigation underway

An investigation is underway after a vehicle crash in south Asheville that left a 20-year-old motorcyclist dead, police confirmed. Around 10:43 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, officers with the Asheville Police Department responded to a car-motorcycle collision in the 1700 block of Hendersonville Road. Police said a preliminary investigation suggests that several motorcycles were driving north "at a high rate of speed" on Hendersonville Road. As a passenger car was turning east onto Turtle Creek Drive, one of the motorcycles entered the intersection and struck the car. The motorcyclist was ejected, according to authorities. MORE LOCAL NEWS The motorcyclist, identified as 20-year-old Subastion James Samuel Cruz-Galyon, was transported to Mission Hospital, where he later died of his injuries. He was just days shy of his 21st birthday, per a GoFundMe page set up to honor his memory. Police said an investigation into the crash is ongoing. The Asheville Police Department said it will consult with the Buncombe County District Attorney's Office after its investigation to determine if any charges will be filed.
