2 woman killed in hit-and-run crash while walking home from World Cup event: prosecutors

A 26-year-old man was reportedly arrested in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed two women who were crossing a street in New Jersey after leaving a World Cup watch party. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office identified the suspect as David J. Zapata-Vera, of Newark, adding that he surrendered to police on Tuesday. In a news release , prosecutors said Zapata-Vera was charged with two counts of second-degree vehicular homicide, two counts of second-degree leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death, and two counts of third-degree endangering an injured victim. Prosecutors said Zapata-Vera hit the women while they were using the crosswalk on Saturday night before fleeing the scene. The women, Mariana Elizabeth Valverde Beltran, 58, and Maria Isabel DeLosAngeles Salgado Ayala, 61, were taken to University Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. According to WABC , the two women left a World Cup party before they were hit. The media outlet obtained video of the crash, noting that "the car went barreling through the intersection and the two were thrown airborne."
