2 dead, 3 injured in Moorpark Highway 23 head-on crash

A violent head-on collision on northbound State Route 23 at Los Angeles Avenue left two people dead and three others seriously injured Saturday afternoon, authorities said. According to the California Highway Patrol, a 2007 Chevy Silverado traveling south tried to pass traffic at high speed using the center median. The driver lost control, striking an embankment and crossing over the median guardrail into northbound lanes, where it crashed head-on with a 2013 Lexus ES350. The impact was severe, and several occupants were ejected from the vehicles. Emergency responders arrived to find CPR in progress on two victims, who were later pronounced dead at the scene. The deceased include the Silverado’s female passenger, born in 2004 from Los Angeles, and the Lexus driver, a 1984-born female from Granada Hills. Three other victims were transported to a local hospital with major injuries. Authorities did not release details on their current condition. No arrests have been made, and investigators say impairment does not appear to be a factor. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Traffic in the area was heavily impacted, with only one northbound lane open as first responders and investigators worked the scene. Authorities continue to gather evidence, and no further details on the victims have been released pending notification of next of kin.
