Young man killed in head-on crash remembered for love of family, friends, golfing skills

A young man from Village Mills who lost his life in a head-on crash the DPS says was caused by another driver traveling in the wrong lane, is remembered by those who knew him best for his love of family, friends, work, golf, and life in the small community that is now grieving his loss. The Texas Department of Public Safety says Keyton Degeyter, 24, of Village Mills, died in the crash early Saturday morning in Hardin County. The DPS says its preliminary investigation shows Degeyter was driving his Ford Focus on Highway 69 South, while another driver in a 2017 Dodge Ram pickup was traveling north in the southbound lane shortly before 4 a.m. Saturday, July 18 and struck the Ford head-on near Overland Loop. Degeyter died at the scene. The driver of the Dodge, identified by the DPS as 72-year-old man from Ivanhoe, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of suspected minor injuries. The DPS says the crash investigation is ongoing. Friends say Keaton was heading to work at Indorama in Port Neches. We're told Keaton graduated from Warren High School where he was a member of the golf team. He was a longtime member of the Wildwood Men's Golf Association. "You know what a fine young man Keaton was," said one man in a Facebook post. "All of Wildwood mourns his loss and is praying for his family." Indorama posted a photo and information about Keaton in February 2023, welcoming him as part of Spring 2023 new class of Operator Co-Op students. "This class is made up of individuals who have demonstrated a strong interest and aptitude for the petrochemical industry, and we are excited to see the contributions they will make in the future." The company says its PNO Operator Co-Op program is an integral part of its commitment to operational excellence and safety. The program provides hands-on training and job shadowing for students who are interested in pursuing a career in the petrochemical industry, while allowing them to earn college credit. Keaton leaves behind a large family to mourn his loss, including his mother, Jenna, his father, Mark Degeyter, siblings, and many other relatives and friends. A close friend of Keaton's family shared this heartfelt message with KFDM: I'm writing as one of Jenna Tupper's closest friends and someone who has known her family for more than a decade. I had the privilege of watching her son, Keaton Degeyter, grow from a little boy into an extraordinary young man. Keaton was only 24 years old, but he carried himself with the maturity of an old soul. He was hardworking, respectful, and genuinely kind to everyone he met. He worked long shifts at a local refinery, and if he wasn't working, you could almost always find him on the Wildwood Golf Course with a golf club in his hand. Golf wasn't just a hobby, it was one of his greatest passions. Keaton never got into trouble. He was the kind of son every parent dreams of raising and the kind of friend everyone was lucky to know. When Jenna lost her husband last year, Keaton stepped into a role no 24-year-old should ever have to fill. He became a source of strength for his family, helping care for his younger siblings while standing beside his mom through one of the darkest seasons of her life. He loved his mother with his whole heart, and she loved him just as fiercely. Like so many young adults, Keaton had big dreams. He wanted to find the right woman, get married, and one day have a family of his own. Those dreams were stolen far too soon. Early Saturday morning, Keaton's life was tragically cut short in a car crash on his way to work. No words can adequately describe the pain his family is now facing or the void his loss has left behind. Our community didn't just lose another young man, we lost one of the truly good ones. His death has also sparked difficult conversations about roadway safety and whether there should be more frequent driving evaluations as people age. While nothing can bring Keaton back, I hope his story encourages meaningful discussions that could help prevent another family from experiencing this kind of unimaginable heartbreak. Keaton's kindness, humility, work ethic, and unwavering love for his family are the legacy he leaves behind. He made the world a better place simply by being in it.
