Woman killed in suspected DUI crash in southwest Las Vegas valley

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A man was arrested, and a woman was killed in a suspected DUI crash Wednesday evening in the southwest Las Vegas valley, according to Metro police. On Wednesday, June 10, around 5:15 p.m., Metro police responded to a report of a crash on West Warm Springs Road, west of Montessouri Street. Evidence at the scene, witness statements and surveillance footage showed that a Toyota Sienna was driving eastbound on West Warm Springs Road at the same time a Tesla Model Y was driving westbound, police said. The crash occurred when the Toyota crossed over into the westbound lanes, resulting in the Tesla attempting to veer out of the way as the Toyota veered back into the eastbound lanes, according to Metro police. The rear passenger of the Toyota, identified as a 33-year-old woman, was taken to a local hospital in critical but stable condition. Several hours later, her condition deteriorated rapidly, and she was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said. Police determined that the driver of the Toyota, identified as 73-year-old Calvin Hayashi, was impaired. He was arrested and taken to the Clark County Detention Center on charges of DUI resulting in death and failure to drive on the right half of the road, records showed. The woman's death marks the 53rd traffic-related fatality in LVMPD's jurisdiction for 2026. Hayashi is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
