Woman and 3-year-old dead after head-on crash in Fairfield County, two others injured

LANCASTER, Ohio (WCMH) — A woman and child suffered fatal injuries and two others were injured in a two-vehicle, head-on crash in Fairfield County Thursday evening. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a woman was driving a 2023 Kia Forte with two child passengers in the back seat. The Kia was traveling eastbound in Berne Township on Bremen Road when it veered left of the center lane and struck a 2015 GMC Acadia. The GMC, which was traveling west on Bremen Road, toward Lake Road SE. Medics arrived at the scene east of Lancaster just past 7:30 p.m. and took the driver of the Kia, 25-year-old Miranda Maughmer, of Lancaster, to an area hospital. She was pronounced dead soon afterward. A 3-year-old passenger in the back seat was also pronounced dead at a hospital, while an 8-month-old child sustained only minor injuries. Both children were secured in child safety seats at the time of the crash, according to the OSHP. Maughmer was reportedly not wearing a seat belt. Also not wearing a safety belt was the driver of the GMC, however she was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover. The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash with the assistance of the Fairfield County Sheriff's Department.
